It certainly is not easy getting ranked number one in a Google search and it takes work to stay there. The rules change daily. Over the years I have experimented and found that by implementing the following strategies, we have gotten the best SEO results without relying on paid ad words.
Action Item 1– Get listed on as many FREE business directories as possible. You may automatically be included in the yellow pages searches because of your business number, but make sure to double check your category and listing information. I couldn’t figure out why when I first started my company in 1995 I started receiving calls asking for bids on hotel rooms. My marketing firm was listed as a hotel on the Yahoo Local Search! I currently have a checklist of about 20 top search engines that I make sure customers are listed with. My favorite for the Downriver market are Merchant Circle.com, and Wayne County Business List.com. Interestingly enough when I first started this list it was over 40 sites large, now the media keep sharing and combining and I am sure soon will be narrowed down even further in the future.
Action Item 2– Get Accounts on the Social networks. Even if you don’t plan to use them right away, it is my opinion this will soon be an issue of not being able to get your user name if you don’t grab yours now. In my opinion, depending on the business, the most effective use of time is to join LinkedIn, Face book, Twitter, YouTube and Plaxo. I have another check list of about 20 more that also may be valuable to various businesses and there are many others out there that could be right for different companies.
Action Item 3– Get a Blog. Attach it to your site. Every time you post a blog (I suggest at least once a week) it re-indexes your site for better search results. Comment on other blogs and sign with your website address.
Action Item 4– Check your web site. Do you have enough reciprocal links to other sites? How are your key words, how is your text content on your home page? Check www.seoscores.com if you’re not sure, this will show you exactly what you need to optimize and it’s free!
Action Item 5-Know thy Traffic. Get Google analytics and see how your site is doing, get Google Alerts to see if the stuff you are posting is getting in the engines.
Action Item 6– Keep It Going! Make a plan to check your listings at least once a month there are also many free coupons or other digital presences you can create through the listings. Plan to post to your on-line accounts, whether it’s once a day, every other day or weekly, the more you post the better your results.
